#SFB480 Interview with Jody Smith

#SFB480 Interview with Jody Smith

The Scott Fish Bowl commences on July 11th. We asked Zach Law to interview some of the participants about the experience. Today’s subject: Jody Smith – Gridiron Experts Co-Owner/Managing Editor.

1. Can you give me a two-sentence introduction to your fantasy football “personna”? Include your Twitter handle.

I’m the Co-owner and Managing Editor at Gridiron Experts and was named FantasyPro’s Most Accurate Expert in 2012. Been in fantasy football since 1991, and proudly entering my third #SFB480 season, and tweet pretty regularly about it @JodySmithNFL.

2. Who in your division do you want to take down the most?

On first glance, I was dismayed at the talent in this division. There’s some fantasy A-listers in this group for sure. I think I get along well with everybody, so there’s no ill will here. However, Scott Barrett from Pro Football Focus said some mean things about me on twitter because I like The Beatles, so I’d really like to smash him with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.

3. Do you have a strategy already set up for the draft or do you let the board fall to you?

Last year I really attacked QB, with Andrew Luck in the first and my QB2 in Round four. It didn’t work out well. Also, with QB being so deep, I’m thinking I’ll hold off on the position this year and try to assemble a strong corps of talent at the other positions. As always, I won’t enter any draft with a dead set strategy, instead, I’ll rely on my league-mates to make mistakes, and I’ll adjust my strategy to capitalize on those missteps.

4. If you got to pick your draft slot, what would you take and why?

I drew the 1.01, which I’m not happy about. I just dislike that long wait until 24. In a 2QB format, that forces my hand a little bit, because missing out on a QB-run can be very ill-advised when you have such a wait in between picks. I always prefer to be right in the middle, with the No. 6 or No. 7 pick to avoid those long, desolate periods of isolation.

5. If you could select four people in the Scott Fish Bowl (#SFB480) to have either a beer or dinner with, who would it be?

I’ve met several members that are in this league, and I’d love to reconnect with any of them, including Mike Rigz, Jeff Ratcliffe, Mike Clay, Mike & Tabbie Tagliere, Sigmund Bloom, Brandon Marianne Lee, Brian Quinlan, Emil Kadlec, TJ Hernandez, JJ Zachariason, Andy Behrens, John Paulsen, Liz Loza, Kent Dougall, Greg Skora and more. All great folks I’d easily rate 10/10- would meet again.

In truth, I wish there was an affordable way for all of us to get together and meet. Maybe do the 2017 #SFB480 as a live draft? Get on it Scott….

  • But picking all new people, of course I’d start with the man himself, Scott Fish (@ScottFish24). For sure I’m picking up the tab on those craft brews to show my appreciation for all the hard work he does putting all of this together.
  • I’ve spoken to Zach Law (@Zach_Law) several times on podcasts and videos, and even did a beer exchange with him, so it would be great to actually sit down face-to-face.
  • Jim Day (@fantasytaz) was one of the first true “fantasy legends” that was humble enough to follow me on twitter when I had 100 followers. Jim was always nice, supportive, and looking for ways to promote and help everybody. He’s a true gentleman, and Hall of Fame worthy to me.
  • I also respect Nick Raducanu (@projectroto) a ton and would love to sit and pick his brain over a handful of tasty IPAs.

6. What’s one non-fantasy football related interest you have that would surprise the rest of the SFB?

Three non-football hobbies that often get neglected annually from late July-January: weightlifting, bird watching and organic gardening.

Thanks to Jody for answering and Zach for hosting. You can find Zach on Twitter @zach_law and make sure you visit his website — Zachlawonline.com. You can catch him on Going for Two every week, talking football, beer, and just about anything else with co-host Sharona Stormborn.
