The Backup Quarterbacks Hot List

The Backup Quarterbacks Hot List

Welcome to the Backup Quarterbacks Hot List. Below is a handy tiered rankings of the backup quarterback landscape in the NFL. The quarterback position is home to much turnover each season — we saw 54 different quarterbacks start at least one game last season — making it a necessity as a 2QBer to be aware of the relevant backups around the league.

We’ve broken down the Backup Quarterback Hot List into four tiers:

Beat Me Up, Scotty! — Backup quarterbacks on the verge of starting, usually due to ineffective play of starting quarterbacks ahead of them on their respective depth charts. Deshaun Watson taking over for Tom Savage in Week 1 is a perfect example.

We Got Next… Maybe — Situations where it looks like a quarterback shakeup might occur, but there are no guarantees. The Chicago Bears quarterback situation is a good example. Mike Glennon is the current QB1, but following a so-so performance in a Week 1 loss, and with both of his top-two wide receivers (Cameron Meredith, Kevin White) lost for the season, Mitchell Trubisky could earn some starts if this becomes a lost season for the Bears. It might not happen for a few weeks, or at all, but making a preemptive waiver wire move and adding Trubisky now could net you a QB1 at a much more affordable cost than when/if he’s named starter.

Richer Than You Think — Backups in high-powered offenses who could become valuable high-upside fantasy assets if the QB1s ahead get injured.

Break Glass in Case of Emergency — Here you will find a mix of veterans with starting experience (think Matt Moore) and inexperienced, young backups (think Nathan Peterman) you might add in-season if the starters ahead of them get injured. You might not think much of Cooper Rush or Matt Cassel, but 40 different quarterbacks posted at least one top-12 fantasy week in 2016, including the likes of Kevin Hogan, Matt Barkley, and Case Keenum.

You never know when a starting quarterback might become a backup quarterback and vice versa. Try to be one step ahead of your 2QB opponents. Hopefully the Backup Quarterbacks Hot List below, which will be updated throughout the season, will help you do just that.
